Starts, Sits, and Streamers – NFL Week 17

After 16 weeks of agonizing over start/sit decisions, waiver adds, and trades, the time has come to decide on your final lineup of the year (unless you’re a Week 18 sicko). Which players can you trust to carry your team to glory, or to save you from an embarrassing, time-consuming, or simply disgusting forfeit?

Even if you have nothing on the line in your leagues, fantasy football is a long time gone, and even rookie drafts are around four months away at the earliest. As always, there are some injuries to keep an eye on, as well as some worrying quarterback changes, and start/sit decisions depend on the strength of your roster.

For anyone looking to the waiver wire for help at QB, TE, Kicker, or Flex, my weekly streamers article for PFSN is available here.

My weekly rankings are available through the link at the top of the screen, and will be updated ahead of Thursday’s, Saturday’s, and Sunday’s games, so be sure to check back in for any changes. For now, though, here are some players you should trust, and some you should avoid in fantasy this week.

START: Jacoby Brissett, QB, Arizona Cardinals

The run finally came to an end for Jacoby Brissett on Sunday. After finishing among the top-12 fantasy quarterbacks in every one of his starts this season, he finally suffered a down week against the Atlanta Falcons.

Brissett recorded his fewest pass attempts (31 – tied) and fewest passing yards (203) of the season, as well as throwing less than two touchdowns for only the second time since becoming Arizona’s starter. If he could hand-pick an opponent to bounce back against, though, the Cincinnati Bengals would be among his first choices.

The Bengals defense has given up the fourth-most passing yards per game (246.8) and the second-most passing touchdowns (31) in the NFL this season. Couple that with Cincinnati’s elite offense, and Brissett could easily put up huge numbers in a shootout.

SIT: Justin Herbert, QB, Los Angeles Chargers

Justin Herbert is coming off his best fantasy performance of the season, but don’t let that fool you into starting him this week unless you have to. Prior to Week 16, Herbert hadn’t produced a top-16 fantasy week since Week 9, and finally did so against the worst pass defense n the NFL,

Dallas has allowed the most passing yards per game (257.8) and most passing touchdowns (33) in the NFL this season. The Houston Texans, on the other hand, have allowed the fourth-fewest passing yards per game (176.1) and the fourth-fewest passing touchdowns (17 – tied).

Herbert isn’t a perennial top-12 fantasy quarterback, and faces one of the worst possble matchups this week, making him a desperation start at best.

START: Rhamondre Stevenson, RB, New England Patriots

This one is dependent on the health of TreVeyon Henderson, but given the rookie is in concussion protocol, it’s highly unlikely he plays this week. That would make Rhamondre Stevenson a bell cow back in what is likely to be a run-friendly game script,

The Jets offense has been atrocious recently, and Brady Cook is set to start at quarterback again. With so little coming in the other direction, the Patriots should be able to build a lead early and run the ball. The Jets have given up 149.5 rushing yards per game over their last four, and Stevenson also has goal-line upside. The Patriots back should be an easy flex start this week if Henderson is sidelined.

SIT: Raheim Sanders, RB, Cleveland Browns

Raheim Sanders has been a popular waiver add this week, after Quinshon Judkins suffered a season-ending injury in Week 16. Sanders took over the lead back role once Judkins left the game, and has a chance to keep that role this weekend.

However, the Browns face the Pittsburgh Steelers this week, and after a notable bump in the road, the Steelers appear to be a nightmare matchup for running backs once more. After limiting the Miami Dolphins to just 63 total rushing yards in Week 15, Pittsburgh allowed only 15 total rushing yards against the Detroit Lions, the most feared rushing attack in the NFL.

Not only does Sanders face a tough matchup, but Dylan Sampson is also in cotention to return from injury this week, and would likely take on a lead role in the Browns’ run game. Sanders could continue to handle goal-line work, making him a desperation flex option, but it’s difficult to get excited about his Wek 17 outlook.

START: Parker Washington, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars

After breaking out earlier in the year with Brian Thomas Jr. sidelined, Washington found himself back on the waiver wire after reverting back to a depth option in recent weeks. On Sunday, though, the explosive return specialist was targeted 10 times against Denver, catching six of those targets for 145 yards and a score.

Not only did Washington find the end zone, but it was on his second end-zone target of the game, which is more good news for his fantasy outlook moving forward. While it could simply have been an effective strategy to target a receiver further down the depth chart to avoid Denver’s more elite defenders, it’s clear that Washington has great chemistry with Trevor Lawrence.

This week, the Jaguars face the Indianapolis Colts, who have given up the third-most FPPG to opposing WRs and the second-most passing yards per game in the NFL this year.

Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Arizona Cardinals

Marvin Harrison Jr. returned from a two-week layoff to record just one catch for 14 yards on Sunday. The boom/bust receiver has disappointed again in his rookie year, despite initially looking far better once the aforementioned Brissett took over at quarterback.

Harrison’s production can be almost impossible to predict, but the odds are stacked against him this week. Despite allowing their troubles defending the pass this season, the Bengals have allowed the third-fewest FPPG to opposing wide receivers, struggling far more to handle tight ends.

With Trey McBride, and now potentially Elijah Higgins, out-targeting him, as well as Michael Wilson, Harrison faces an uphill battle to provide fantasy gold on Sunday.

Harold Fannin Jr., TE, Cleveland Browns

An early-season breakout has turned into a consistently productive rookie season for Harold Fannin Jr. in Cleveland. Over his last four games, Fannin has racked up four touchdowns, and averaged nine targets per game. One of those touchdowns came on a goal-line rush attempt, adding further weight to his fantasy value, as the Browns find new ways to manufacture him touches.

This week, Fannin and the Browns take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have allowed the third-most FPPG to tight ends this season. The Steelers, as mentioned, have improved dramatically against the run, but struggled against the pass. Cleveland would be wise to prioritize its air attack this weekend, and Fannin would be a huge part of that.

Dalton Kincaid, TE, Buffalo Bills

While Fannin faces a promising matchup, the same can’t be said for Dalton Kincaid, who put up a goose egg in fantasy against the Browns in Week 16. Those who survived that disappointment may be tempted to overlook that performance, given Kincaid’s solid reputation and role in the Buffalo Bills offense.

However, the Philadelphia Eagles are quicker than most over the middle of their defense, with Zack Baun, Jihaad Campbell, and multiple safeties and slot corners capable of making plays in coverage. Because of this, the Eagles have given up the second-fewest FPPG to opposing tight ends this year. Kincaid is a great player on a great offense, but he’s up against it this week.

That concludes my starts and sits for this week. Don’t forget to check out my Week 17 streamers article for PFSN if you’re looking to stream a QB, TE, Kicker, or Defense this week.
